Proposed Legislation Would Limit Property Tax Increases

As seniors and others struggle with ballooning property taxes, can solutions like the proposed ‘residential stability zones’ in Ohio help?

Ohio House Bill 598 and Ohio Senate Bill 42 would allow local governments to offer relief through residential stability zones, areas where limited-income homeowners ages 60 and over could get property tax breaks. Under the legislation, local governments could set geographic boundaries for the zones, eligibility rules for participants and parameters for property tax reductions.

Ed Stockhausen, senior vice president of advocacy and external relations for the nonprofit Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, has been working to pass the legislation for several years.

“These are people who have been the foundation of our community, and as they’re entering their golden years and as the neighborhoods improve around them, they shouldn’t be displaced,” says Stockhausen. Read more from Columbus Monthly.
